There was standing room only at the Adelong Services and Citizens Club last night for Great Divide Mining’s – Challenger Mine – Community Information Evening, with more than 60 local residents packing the club to hear directly from the Company.
Asked about the turnout, Chairman Paul Ryan said, “We lost count at 62… so more than sixty for sure.”
Mr Ryan said the strong attendance reflected genuine local interest in the future of the Challenger Mine and its role within the district.
“I’m from a rural background myself, and I’m genuinely delighted to see how interested and engaged the Adelong community is in what’s happening in its’ town and in its’ district.”
The evening provided an open forum for discussion, with CEO Justin Haines addressing a broad range of community questions.
Mr Haines reaffirmed the Company’s position on processing at the site:
“The site has never used cyanide, and we’re not about to start. It’ll be clean recycled water only.”
He also outlined GDM’s staged and safety-focused development plan, including:
- Progressive clean-up and rehabilitation of legacy surface mullock
- Transition to a small-scale open cut to improve site access and safety
- Establishment of dual entry and exit points in preparation for underground mining operations
Mr Haines noted that these steps form part of a measured recommissioning strategy, with a clear focus on protecting the environment and maintaining community amenity.
Closing the session, Mr Haines acknowledged the community.
“We wanted to engage positively with the Adelong community. They’ve engaged solidly, positively, and in big numbers. We’re delighted.”
